Arium provided full architecture and MEP engineering design services for a 7,200 sq. ft. 2-story new facility design for the Bayside Animal Medical Center in Severna Park, MD. The first floor of the building houses six exam rooms, two grooming rooms, a kennel, x-ray, dental and surgery treatment rooms, an open treatment area, and associated storage areas. There are also shared veterinarian office areas, restrooms, laundry and janitor closets, and a staff breakroom. The 2nd floor contains storage areas and other support offices and is accessible via an at-grade entrance near the rear of the building and an internal stair to the first floor.
The design team collaborated with the experienced client to integrate several unique details and features within the building. The design includes a reception desk with boat cleats for securing pet leash and freeing hands during check out; a waiting area with a low wall for animal separation; a weighing scale recessed into the floor slab for animals reluctant to step on a raised scale; an open floor treatment area for ease of movement; and treatment rooms with windows. A product display and storage behind the reception desk and plenty of millwork and sinks are located throughout. Treatment rooms have direct access to the exterior for those who might be grieving the loss of a pet and not wanting to exit through the waiting room. The treatment room exterior exits also allow staff access to discrete pick-up services without going through central areas.
